"Dem Visualisten James Whale war es vergönnt, die erste Tonfilm-Adaption des Shelleyschen Romans ins Leben zu rufen und damit den Grundstein für den Kinomythos "Frankenstein" zu legen. Bis heute noch gelten die Regeln, die sich die Drehbuchautoren von Universal 1931 ausdachten: das übergroße, häßliche Monstrum, seine Erschaffung bei Blitz und Donner sowie die einhergehenden Laboraktivitäten Frankensteins. Boris Karloffs Maske (von Jack Pierce geformt) als 'Geschöpf des Abnormalen" ist zum unauslöschbaren Bild des künstlich geschaffenen Menschen geworden. Darüber hinaus wartet FRANKENSTEIN jedoch auch noch mit ein paar ausgeklügelten Bauten und Set-Pieces auf, die ebenso Mustergültigkeit im Horrorgenre erhalten haben. Auch wenn James Whales Inszenierung an manchen Stellen etwas statisch und theaterhaft wirkt, so ist doch sein FRANKENSTEIN ein durchweg spannender und fesselnder Horrorfilm geworden, der völlig zu Recht das Prädikat Filmklassiker bekommen hat."
