1947 wandert der in Ungarn geborene jüdischen Architekt und Holocaust-Überlebende László Tóth in die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika aus. Zunächst gezwungen, in Armut zu schuften, erhält er bald einen ungewöhnlichen Auftrag des Industriellen Van Buren, der den Verlauf seines weiteren Lebens verändert. Eine vierstündige Monumentalerzählung, inspiriert von Leben und Werk des ungarisch-amerikanischen Architekten Marcel Breuer (1902–1981).
