There were even a few celebrity stoners that were big fans, with the likes of John Lennon claiming to have watched it weekly. "Mitten im Jahrzehnt des 'Space Race' feilte Kubrick mit dem Physiker und Science-Fiction-Autor Arthur C. Clarke an der ehrgeizigen 2001-Idee über ein Planetenflug-Projekt. Parallel dazu plante die NASA die Mondmission – und realisierte, dass die Raketensteuerung die Astronauten überfordern würde, und über weite Strecken Computer diese Rolle übernehmen müssten. Erstmals in der Geschichte war der Mensch nicht mehr Herr über sein Werkzeug, sondern ihm ausgeliefert. Das war auch ein Kernthema von 2001, beginnend beim urzeitlichen Werkzeuggebrauch im Auftakt des Films, endend beim Psychoduell zwischen dem bevormundenden wie unberechenbaren Superrechner des Raumschiffs, HAL 9000, und den Astronauten.
